SON ROMPE PERA: MARIMBA MEETS PUNK

Mexican band Son Rompe Pera returns with their new album “Marimbazos De Oro”, which fuses traditional South American rhythms with the uncompromising energy of punk rock, salsa, and psychedelia. This musical hurricane proves that genre boundaries are merely an illusion.

From Family Traditions to Punk Defiance

The Mexican music scene has a new king of rebellion. Group Son Rompe Pera, founded by the Gama brothers in the streets of Naucalpan, Mexico, delivers their boldest musical mix yet on their third album, “Marimbazos De Oro”. Released via Mixto Records and produced by Grammy-nominated guitarist Adrian Quesada, the new record shows the band in top form.

The band’s story goes back deep into the past, when brothers Kacho, Mongo, and Kilos hauled the traditional wooden marimba to weddings and funerals alongside their father, José “Batuco.” Although traditional music felt like old-school stuff to them in their youth as they craved punk rock, ska, and mosh pits, after their father passed away in 2016, they realized they didn’t have to choose. They plugged their ancestral instrument straight into a wall of distortion and created a unique musical phenomenon.

“We are rockers who play cumbia,” says Mongo Gama with a smile about the band’s unique identity and approach to traditional music.

A Genre-Bending Wilderness Full of Star Guests

Across the twelve tracks of the new album, diverse influences blend together, ranging from North American folk to punk and cosmic soul. The opening track “Arboledas” was created in collaboration with Zac Sokolow from LA LOM, while the energetic “Sombra” delivers an uncompromising fusion of pop-punk and oi style featuring backing vocals by Spike from Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Fans of more traditional approaches will find their favorite in José Dolores, a tribute to their late father featuring the horn section of Bogotá salsa-punks La Pambelé as the band makes their first real dive into salsa.

Another unforgettable moment on the album is the collaboration with Trish Toledo on the gorgeous soul ballad “Me Olvidaste”, alongside the lead single “Reptilio”, where producer Adrian Quesada himself plays guitar. While tracks like Muérete will ignite wild pogoing in the front rows, pulsing rhythms in the closing track “Hagan Rueda” are bound to take over the dance floors.

The Los Angeles Times called them “one of the most energetic acts in Latin punk. Or punk, period.”

“Marimbazos De Oro” is not just an ordinary musical recording, but the complete story of a family that transformed traditional rhythms into a modern, chaotic world. Whether you prefer a wild mosh pit or dancing under the open sky, this album will sweep you away from the very first minute, which is why we decided to feature it in our “Album of the Week” segment in our broadcast on the Mixcloud platform.
