The June chart is dominated by Brazilian artist Seu Jorge with his latest release, “Other Side,” which serves as a love letter to classic MPB, jazz, and bossa nova. This project acts as an excellent entry point into the Brazilian musical canon while simultaneously opening a significant new chapter for its devoted fans. Seu Jorge, also widely known as a terrific actor from the films City of God and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, fuses funk, soul, and samba on this record to deliver his most comprehensive and complete work to date. The album was recorded in Los Angeles under the production of Mario Caldato Jr., the man behind the Beastie Boys’ hit albums. The rich orchestral arrangements were crafted by the acclaimed composer and multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. The record features stellar guest appearances by big names like Marisa Monte, Beck, and Maria Rita, and includes brilliant covers of tracks by Milton Nascimento and Nick Drake. Throughout the entire recording, Jorge’s deep, velvety voice takes center stage, evoking the legendary sound of Nat King Cole, with the artist himself describing this album as the best work he has ever done.
